It was laminated - so it can last for years. Even decades. It’s almost a family heirloom at this point
What This Sign is really about is a parent who has been available for approximately forever… and now trying to be unavailable for a few minutes.
The family adapts well to Mom always being available.
Very often Mothers live by a myth that they must always be available. And the family system learns that Mom is the person who responds to every. thing.
Questions.
Updates.
Emergencies that are not emergencies.
Questions like “Ma! What time is shabbos?” that can be found on every Calendar in the house. Or even better “Should I wear this?” Which I’ve learned is TRULY a trick question just to get you to open the door.
Don’t Fall For It FellowMoms!
So when the door closes?
Everyone. notices. And there is always ‘that one’ who even panics.
“Do not ask how long I will be.”
That’s a parent saying, YOU GOT THIS!
“Do not bring the phone to the bathroom door.”
Translation: Pleassssseee handle this telemarketer on your own.
“Do not announce to the entire house - and everyone who calls - that I am in the bathroom.”
Honestly, iconic!
From a family systems point of view, this all makes sense.
When one person changes something that they’ve been doing, even a tiny bit, the family reacts.
Not because the change is bad,
but because families like things the way they’re used to.
Here’s the good news, Moms:
They’re all gonna be A-OK… and it may even be good for them to adjust to the fact that,
Mom is sometimes … nisht available!
